Suzan Matsukawa, the creative mind behind em•bell•ish design, has a passion for infusing homes with warmth and eclectic charm through her floral designs. With a journey that reflects resilience, creativity, and a commitment to integrity, Suzan’s story is one of inspiration. Join us as we explore her insights, values, and aspirations, and discover how she is making a positive impact in her community.

Q: What does success mean to you, and how has this definition evolved over time?
Suzan: Success means reflecting on my life choices and feeling a sense of peace and accomplishment. Initially, I thought it was about achieving career milestones and financial abundance, but now I realize it’s about the positive impact I have on my family, friends, and community. As I’ve grown, I’ve started to ask myself deeper questions, like whether I’m leaving a legacy of kindness. At this stage, success is about nurturing those meaningful connections and teaching my children the values of goodness and compassion.

Q: Who is your ideal client, and how do you serve them?
Suzan: My ideal clients are individuals and businesses looking to celebrate milestones through floral design. They trust the creative process and value my expertise. I love collaborating with clients on weddings, events, and special occasions, ensuring each design reflects their unique vision. I also enjoy working with fellow creatives—whether it’s pastry chefs, photographers, or event planners—to create unforgettable experiences together.

Q: What inspired you to start your business, and what makes your approach unique?
Suzan: My journey began after I stepped away from a long corporate career and realized I had untapped creative energy. Floral design felt intuitive to me, and I began taking workshops to hone my skills. I brought my designs to local businesses on consignment, which sparked the beginning of my small business. What sets me apart is my commitment to going the extra mile for my clients, ensuring every detail is perfect and their needs are met throughout the entire process.

Q: How has your personal journey shaped who you are today?
Suzan: My personal journey has been filled with both challenges and growth. Losing my father unexpectedly at a young age and my mother’s struggle with mental illness shaped my outlook on life. My older sister took me in, which instilled in me a deep sense of compassion for those facing hardships. This background has taught me the importance of family and independence. Having my own children has further deepened my understanding of nurturing and supporting others.

"Integrity is my guiding principle; I believe in doing the right thing even when no one is watching."

Q: What are the core values that guide your decisions, both personally and professionally?
Suzan: Fairness, respect, kindness, and follow-through are also essential values in both my personal and professional life. I strive to embody these qualities in every interaction, ensuring my clients feel valued and supported.

Q: How has the VCBW community impacted your journey?
Suzan: Getting involved with the VCBW community was one of the best decisions I made after starting my business in 2020. I’ve been inspired and blessed by the women in this community. The Coffee & Connection monthly meetings have been particularly meaningful, providing a supportive network of like-minded women who uplift each other.

Q: What advice would you give to women who aspire to lead and make an impact in their fields?
Suzan: My advice is to lead by example and remain committed to your values. Remember that your actions can influence others profoundly. Treat everyone with kindness and respect, and don’t shy away from sharing your unique perspective and experiences, as they can inspire others in their journeys.

Q: How do you maintain your mental and emotional health while pursuing high professional goals?
Suzan: I focus on being ready for new opportunities and challenges that come my way. Daily prayer and nurturing close friendships are vital for my mental and emotional well-being. My core group of friends has been a steadfast support system, helping me stay grounded while pursuing my goals.

Q: Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for the next phase of your life and career?
Suzan: As I transition into semi-retirement, I’m excited about exploring bucket list travel destinations, focusing on spiritual growth, engaging in new creative projects, and prioritizing my health. I view this next chapter as a chance to embrace life’s adventures while continuing to nurture my passions and connections.
